HOTEL BASICS

Choosing the right hotel area: city centre, near the airport or by the beach?

The location of a hotel often matters more to the client's experience than the star rating. A comfortable hotel in the wrong area can mean long taxi rides, wasted time and extra cost every day of the trip.

Start with the purpose of the trip. A client who plans to visit attractions, restaurants and shops will usually prefer a central area. A client who only needs a place to sleep before an early flight may be better off near the airport. A family on a resort holiday may value a quiet beachfront location more than easy access to the city.

Look at the map, not only the hotel's description. 'Close to the centre' can mean a five-minute walk or a thirty-minute drive. Check the distance to the airport, to the main attractions and to public transport, and think about how the client will actually move around each day.

Consider the surroundings. Central areas are lively but can be noisy at night, while quieter areas may have fewer restaurants within walking distance. Ask whether the client prefers activity or peace, and match the area to their answer.

Remember the hidden cost of distance. A cheaper hotel far from the centre can cost more once daily transport is added. Compare the full picture, including time and travel costs, before you recommend a hotel to your client.
