Hotel meal plans explained: room only, bed and breakfast, half board and all inclusive

A meal plan describes which meals are included in the room price. The four plans you will see most often are room only, bed and breakfast, half board and all inclusive. Choosing the right one can change the total cost of a trip more than many agents expect.

Room only includes no meals. It suits travellers who plan to eat out, who have special dietary needs or who are staying in a city with many restaurants nearby. Bed and breakfast adds a daily breakfast and is the most common plan for city trips.

Half board usually adds breakfast and one other meal, normally dinner. It suits resorts or locations where there are few restaurants nearby. All inclusive normally covers all meals and often some drinks and snacks, which works well for families at a resort who want a fixed budget.

The exact details differ from hotel to hotel. Ask what is covered, which drinks are included, the meal times and whether a la carte restaurants cost extra. Never assume that all inclusive means everything is free.

Compare the real cost, not just the room price. A cheaper room only rate can become the more expensive option once the family pays for every meal, and an all inclusive stay can be poor value if the client rarely eats at the hotel. A short question about how they plan to eat will usually show the right choice.
